Top 10 tips for staying safe in Gildenburgh Water Lake

  1. Don’t mix swimming and alcohol
  2. Check in at reception so we know you’re on site
  3. Don’t jump in. Enter the water slowly down our steps to prevent ‘cold water shock’
  4. Do our recommended flotation check before your swim
  5. Swim close to the land surrounding the lake in case you need to get out quickly
  6. Swim with others when possible that know the lake and have swum in open water before
  7. Make sure you’re visible on the surface, and don’t swim underwater. Wear a brightly coloured cap and consider using a tow-float
  8. Decide after each lap of the lake if you can safely swim another lap
  9. If someone is in trouble, don’t put yourself at risk. Call out “FLOAT ON YOUR BACK”. Then call for help
  10. If you find yourself in difficulty, FLOAT ON YOUR BACK TO THE SHORE, AND CALL FOR HELP

    SWIM BOOKING FORM

The safety procedure for the lake is based on each swimmer being able to float motionless on the water without sinking. This is achieved by one of two methods.

#1. The swimmer wears a wetsuit which provides substantial buoyancy as well as keeping them warm
    OR
#2. The swimmer wears a swim costume, & tows a personal float behind them.
In the event the swimmer gets cramp in their legs they will be able to float on the surface with the wetsuit's buoyancy, or hold the float to their chest until the safety boat reaches them.
By booking this swim. you agree to undertake this simple flotation check yourself by floating on your back without kicking, or sculling with your hands, when you arrive for your first swim OR if you change your flotation device.
If you don't have a wetsuit or a float you can rent a wetsuit @£8 or a float @£2 in field #11 of the booking form below.
